What You Need to Know Before Reaching the Rental Counter
Your Hawaii trip is finally booked! The next item on your list is renting a car, but you only carry a debit card. While you can certainly rent a car using a debit card, major rental agencies enforce specific criteria at pickup.
Car rental companies view customers paying with credit cards as lower risk since they are entrusting renters with expensive vehicles. Paying with cash or debit presents a higher risk, which is why agencies put rules and hold requirements in place.

- Expanded Vehicle Classes: You can now rent Luxury, Premium, and Convertible classes using a debit card when booking Dollar or Thrifty on our website!
- Incidental Hold: A hold equal to the rental total plus a $200 security deposit will be authorized at pickup.
Standard Requirements for Most Major Agencies
1. Secondary Identification Required
Most agencies require additional identification when paying with a debit card. Be prepared to present your driver's license alongside one of the following:
- Passport or Military ID
- Photo ID membership card (e.g., Costco or Sam's Club)
- Additional credit or debit card embossed with renter's name
- Current utility bill (with matching name and address to driver's license)
- Round-trip flight or cruise itinerary
2. Card Eligibility & Holds
Your debit card must display a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover logo stamped on the front. Prepaid and gift cards are not accepted at pickup (though some brands allow them for final payment upon vehicle return). Expect an authorization hold between $200 and $350 above the estimated rental cost.
3. Credit Checks & Age Restrictions
Except for Dollar and Thrifty, many agencies perform a credit check (such as Equifax) for debit card renters. Failing the credit check will result in rental denial at the counter.
At traditional counters, renters under 25 cannot rent using a debit card (though they can be added as an additional driver subject to daily young driver fees).
4. Hawaii Residents & Vehicle Categories
Hawaii Residents: Local residents generally cannot rent a vehicle with a debit card on the specific island where they reside.
Vehicle Restrictions: Standard debit card policies often restrict rentals to Economy through Fullsize categories (excluding SUVs, convertibles, or specialty cars). However, as noted above, Dollar and Thrifty permit Convertible, Premium, and SUV rentals on debit cards when booked through our site.
