Kihei Travel FAQ
Do I need a rental car in Kihei?
Yes. While Kihei is walkable in specific beach corridors, a car is necessary to visit Haleakala, drive the Road to Hana, explore Upcountry Maui, or reach nearby beaches and resorts in Wailea and West Maui.
Airport pickup or local pickup — which is better?
Picking up at Kahului Airport (OGG), about 25-30 minutes north, is usually most convenient and cost-effective, with access to a larger vehicle selection. Local Kihei/Wailea pickup is convenient if you only need a car for part of your stay.
How far is Kihei from Kahului Airport?
About 12-15 miles south — a 20 to 30 minute drive via Highway 311 (Mokulele Highway).
Can I drive a standard rental car to the Road to Hana?
Yes — standard rental cars can be driven on the main paved route (Highway 360) to Hana Town and Ohe'o Gulch. Check agency terms for unpaved roads beyond Kipahulu.
