Insurance Coverage Guide
Hawaii Rental Car Checklist. What you should know.
All the rental car agencies we work with offer options such as car seats, insurance coverage’s, GPS, etc. They are readily available for purchase at the rental counter. Pricing varies slightly from agency to agency, it's up to individual rental agencies to set those price points. Since our system only books your vehicle, please refer directly with the rental car agencies websites or contact them direct for current pricing on the options you require. Insurance is optional and NOT included in the rental reservation(s).
Breakdown of options. Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is a fee that is charged to reduce your liability in case of loss or damage to the rental vehicle. If the car is damaged or stolen you will only be liable for a set amount rather than the full value of the car. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is similar, but limited to collisions. Again, it reduces your liability from the full value of the car, to a set amount.Personal Protection Plan (PPP) – Personal Accident Insurance for accidental death and accidental medical expenses as well as Personal Effects Insurance for loss or damage to your personal belongings. Supplemental liability Insurance (SLI), which covers third parties in the event of an accident. Tripsaver, provides you with towing service in the event of an accident, lock-out and lost key service, flat tire service, and fuel and battery service during your rental.
Check your Auto policy & Credit card for coverage's. I suggest before you opt for pricey optional coverage's, check your auto insurance policy for coverage's you may have while in a rented vehicle. Plus, in some cases, the credit card you use to rent the vehicle provides certain coverage's. In either case, US and non US citizens should look into their options before you get to the counter. The coverage you have for your main vehicle often extends to your rental vehicle, because the rental is considered a replacement vehicle under the policy. So, if you have comprehensive coverage on your own car, your policy may also give you comprehensive coverage for the rental vehicle. If you have the minimum legally permissible coverage, it may not include coverage for rental cars. Again, auto insurance policies and credit card coverage's vary considerably. About 8% of the car rental industry's revenue comes from sales of optional coverage, according to Chris Brown, the executive editor of Auto Rental News.
People residing in European countries, folks residing in Australia, New Zealand: often receive quotes that have coverage's built in from their side of the pond. Typically, sites like ours do not have coverage's included in the rate quote unless you make a special request. AA Aloha Car R Us populate rates only and can not provide automated options such as insurance, car seats, etc. This is due to the limitations of the systems in place. So, you must contact us if you require an quote for an inclusive rate. The last thing we ever want to hear is someone getting to the counter, only to find out the vehicle booked has optional coverage. We offer two contracts under our discounted rate umbrella that you can use to check rates and book directly from. Please note, these offering's are dependent on your location and rental dates, not all countries/dates will populate inclusive rates. Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is not insurance. It is a waiver between you and the car rental company of all financial responsibility for loss or damage to the rented vehicle, including theft, provided the terms and conditions of the rental agreement are not violated. When renting a vehicle, you are personally responsible for any and all loss or damage to the vehicle, regardless of fault. Many times the cost of the Loss Damage Waiver may be less than what you would pay if you accept responsibility for the vehicle and use your own insurance or credit card coverage. Most credit card coverage is secondary, which means you would still have to file a claim on your personal insurance.
Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) provides third-party automobile liability claims for bodily injury
and property damage.
Accepting SLI will give you primary coverage to your
personal insurance and covers your liability to third parties,
resulting from an auto accident in the rented vehicle, for
bodily injury and property damage (other than to the rental
vehicle) to the maximum protection of $1 million for each
What does “third-party liability” mean?
A: In simple terms, if you are at fault in an auto
accident, you may be responsible to pay damages
to the person or persons you injured and/or
property you damaged.
Why do some purchase LDW if there own insurance will cover them? A claim on your personal insurance is often accompanied by a deductible and a possible premium increase. You have a hassle free experience of not having to deal with different companies to settle the claim.
The Kicker.. Credit card companies may include coverage for Economy through Fullsize and very well may exclude coverage's on Specialty vehicles, Luxury cars, SUV’s, etc.
Review before you arrive. Don't wait until the last minute to insure your rental car. The time to decide is before you reach the rental counter.
This guide is only a summary of the optional
coverage and protections. The specific terms and conditions should be reviewed individually to your needs.
